Honorary Golf Chairmen

Stephen Keppel, Jr. (Jim's Grandfather)

Jim and his GrandfatherSteve was a Center and Linebacker at Nazareth High School. After high school he played on the Lafayette football team after serving in the Navy in the South Pacific in WWII. In his last two years he played both offense and defense under the new head coach, Ivy Williamson, former coach at Yale. The much improved team earned a Jan.1, 1949 Sun Bowl invitation.

Keppel received his undergraduate degree from Lafayette in 1949 and immediately went to work in management for St. Regis Paper Co. and after spending 46 years in the industry, he retired in 1995.

Steve has been an avid golfer most of his life and at age 84 still plays two to three times a week. His current handicap is in the low 20ties and he is happy when he and his partner can collect on bets after their round.

"After retiring, Jim brought back to me my own early years of football, by attending all
of his games from high school and all through his college years. Being
around the practice fields with him was so enjoyable. Jim was always happy
around me and was always ready to chat about sports and many other things or
actually ready to toss around a football or a baseball. But when he put on those pads
and helmet and headed to those scrimmages, well that turned on another light in me.

The most memorable event that I will always remember was his first college game as a freshman, Yale vs. Brown in 1999, there he was on the kickoff return team, the middle lineman, and then the flashback came to me, in my very first game with Lafayette at NYU in 1944, I was in the exact same position as Jim was. What a feeling I experienced and I knew Jim was having that same feeling too. We shared great times together. By the way, we won that game at NYU and so did Jim and his teammates at Yale."
