James Keppel Scholarship Report 2012

Beethorens Seide (LCS 2007) continues to be the sole recipient of the James F. Keppel Scholarship. Beethorens is nearing the end of his university education, and he is expected to graduate in July 2012.

In conjunction with the Keppel Foundation, The Haitian Project and the Office of External Affairs recommend that we begin the process of selecting another LCS Alumnus/a to be a new recipient of the James F. Keppel Scholarship. This process will aim to select a new scholar from the class of 2012 by the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year. We hope to discuss this process in greater detail in the coming months. Thank you again for your continued support and we appreciate your assistance to the graduates of Louverture Cleary School.

Past scholarship recipient, Martineau Isaac (LCS 2003) graduated from the Université Notre Dame d'Haiti in 2010 with a degree in medicine. He completed his year of government mandated social service at a hospital in the Nord-Est Department, close to the border with the Dominican Republic in a town called Ouanaminthe. Martineau's year of social service ended in November 2011 and he is currently looking for full-time employment. He is temporarily replacing a doctor at Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Milot, which is in the Norte Department close to Cap Haitien. Martineau would like to specialize in Gynecology and Obstetrics.

Beethorens is a 2007 graduate of Louverture Cleary School and is studying agronomy at the state university in the Faculté d’Agronomie ET de Médecine Vétérinaire. He is currently in his fifth and final year of study, and he will graduate in July 2012. Upon graduating, he will continue to work on his final thesis, which will be finished during the next six to nine months. In addition, he will continue to teach Experimental Science to the Senkeme (8th grade) students at Louverture Cleary School. Below is a thank-you letter from Beethorens to the Keppel Foundation.

Dear Members of the Keppel Foundation,

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to write you this letter, in order to thank you for all the support that you have given me for my past five years of studies.

I am near the end of my fifth year of study, which means that I am almost finished with my university studies. You have contributed a lot and helped me to reach this level. I hope that I will have the opportunity to use my skills for my community, my country, and my family. After I graduate in July, I will continue working on my “memoire”, my thesis. When I finish I will have a license and more opportunities to find a job.

Members of the Keppel Foundation, my words, my expressions are not sufficient to express my gratefulness towards you, but I just want to thank you and I would like you to know that these are sincere words and they are coming from the bottom of my heart.

May God bless you,

SEIDE Beethorens
